Lake Amistad
On the way to Big Bend Country, it is recommended that recreational fisherman enjoy Lake Amistad just ten miles west of Del Rio. It contains 65,000 surface acres of water with a depth of 217 feet at the dam. Balmorhea Lake
In the Ft. Davis territory, enjoy the Balmorhea Lake Fishing Resort just off I-10 near the Balmorhea exit. It has 150 surface acres and is open all year round.
The fish are:
- Catfish
- Florida Bass
- Blue Gill
- Crappie
The facilities include a baitstop and grocery store, eight R.V. Hookups, four electrical and water hookups, and areas to pitch your tent. To get there, take Henderson Road (Downtown Balmorhea) 4.5 miles due south.
Rio Grande River
Recreational fishing is also permitted at the semi-tropical elevations along the Rio Grande River inside Big Bend National Park. Most of the native fish are similar to minnows in size. However, avid anglers can catch catfish, gizzard shad, carp and suckers, freshwater drum, and an occasional longnose gar. The catfish are blues, channels and flatheads. The longnose gar may reach over four feet long and is predatory (long snout and sharp teeth).
